BDSM Interests Many Adults, Survey Says

The study sample included 459 men, 565 women, and 3 participants who identified as “other.” They ranged in age from 18 to 65 years and were divided into four age groups of comparable size. Men appeared to be more interested in BDSM activities than women.

The oldest group, between the ages of 48 and 65, was the least inclined to have BDSM interests. The researchers noted that this group might be more likely to associate BDSM activities with stigma. Also, access to BDSM information and partners may have been more restricted for this group.

The authors also explained that BDSM has become more accepted in recent years. In the past, such activities were considered deviant behaviors, but there has been little research to support that claim.

“Future research is needed to destigmatize it by confirming BDSM as a leisurely preference rather than a psychiatric affliction,” they wrote.

The study was published online in August 2017 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
