Diabetic Men Should be Screened for Erectile Dysfunction, Experts Say

Over half of men with diabetes also suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED), according to a new analysis published in the journal Diabetic Medicine.

Diabetic men are over three and a half times more likely to develop ED than men without diabetes, the authors said. Men with diabetes often start having erection problems earlier in life, too.

These findings come from a recent analysis of 145 medical studies on diabetes and ED. Overall, the studies included over 88,000 men with an average age of 56.

Based on the data, the researchers calculated an overall ED rate of 53% worldwide. Prevalence for men with type 2 diabetes was higher at 66%. For men with type 1 diabetes, the rate was 38%.

Diabetes can impair erections in two ways.
