Diabetes Screening Important for Men with EDMen with erectile dysfunction (ED) should be screened for diabetes, especially if they’re middle-aged, Canadian experts say.

That’s because men with ED are more than twice as likely to have undiagnosed diabetes, according to research published in the July/August issue of Annals of Family Medicine.

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. It’s often been linked to heart disease, it was unclear whether ED was a marker for undiagnosed risk factors for heart disease, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

To learn more, the scientists analyzed records from over 21,000 men who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2001 and 2004. The NHANES project evaluates health and nutrition information for adults and children living in the United States. This is accomplished with interviews and physical exams.
