Vardenafil for Female Partners

Sexual concerns are unique amongst medical problems in that they affect a couple rather than an individual.  While a partner or spouse’s medical illness may have a major influence on an individual, partner sexual problems exert a more direct effect on that individual’s quality of life and well-being.  On a happier note, the relationship of sexual problems to a couple’s overall well-being means that treatment of a sexual problem may yield benefit for not one but two people.  In this study of 343 heterosexual couples (277 of whom completed the entire study), it was demonstrated that treatment with the drug vardenafil (Levitra®) led to significant improvements in sexual quality of life of men with erectile dysfunction.  While this finding alone is not novel, it was also determined that the female partners of men treated with vardenafil also experienced an improvement in their sexual quality of life. It is important to note that women in this study were required to have no or only mild physical problems with sexual function as determined by a survey instrument called the Female Sexual Function Index.

This sort of research may seem intuitive or even obvious but it is important to definitively prove the relationship between treatment of sexual problems and sexual satisfaction.  Regardless of the type of treatment selected, men and women who are struggling with sexual problems should talk to their significant other about the situation and seek out appropriate treatment; this may be good for both the patient and his/her partner.
