Tadalafil and Sexual Problems that Accompany BPH/LUTS

Men with sexual problems associated with an enlarged prostate might have some good news on the horizon.

The drug tadalafil, commonly prescribed for erectile dysfunction (ED) under the brand name Cialis, has been shown to help alleviate some of the sexual problems that accompany BPH/LUTS, according research published online in January in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

BPH stands for benign prostatic hyperplasia – an enlarged prostate. Many men have BPH and the likelihood increases as men get older. More than half of men have an enlarged prostate by the time they’re 60, according to the American Urological Association.

For some men, BPH causes no problems. But others develop LUTS – lower urinary tract symptoms - because as the prostate enlarges inward, it can squeeze the urethra. Also, the enlarged prostate can disturb or block the bladder, which sits just above it.
