Excessive Alcohol Consumption Could Affect Sperm Count and QualityDrinking more than five units of alcohol a week could affect the count and quality of a man’s sperm, researchers have found.

And the more a man drinks, the greater this effect becomes.

Scientists from Denmark and the United States analyzed the drinking habits of 1,221 Danish men between the ages of 18 and 28 (mean age 19 years). They also tested the count and quality of the men’s sperm and checked levels of reproductive hormones, including testosterone.

The researchers defined one unit of alcohol as one beer, one glass of wine, or the approximate equivalent of one shot of liquor.

They discovered that men who had at least five drinks a week had lower sperm counts and poorer sperm quality than men who had one drink a week.
