Reddit Group Supports Men Quitting Porn

Reddit Group Supports Men Quitting Porn Men are turning to an anonymous Reddit forum for help in controlling their porn use.

Created in June 2011, the forum, called r/NoFap, currently has 626,000 members, called “Fapstronauts.” The group features “rebooting challenges” to help members work on self-control or give up pornography for the long term. (NoFap itself is a community-based porn recovery website.)

A common theme in the discussions is porn-induced erectile dysfunction (PIED). Some men feel that their porn use triggers erection problems because they need more sexual stimulation to keep an erection.

Researchers investigated the r/NoFap group in the context of PIED and presented their findings last fall at the 20th Annual Fall Scientific Meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America.

The research team examined 753 posts related to PIED and 21,966 non-PIED posts.

They discovered that men concerned about PIED often discussed anxiety, libido, and motivation. For men who did not post about PIED, self-improvement, intimacy, addiction, and restfulness were common topics.

“A better understanding of patients’ anxieties expressed on social media may help with tailoring counseling and medical management of men experiencing sexual dysfunction or dissatisfaction related to their porn usage,” the authors wrote.
