Diabetes Screening Important for Men with ED

Finally, high blood sugar can interfere with the production of certain chemicals that are needed for an erection, such as nitric oxide, which aids blood flow by relaxing smooth muscle tissue.

The study results can help both patients and doctors, the scientists explained.

“Men with erectile dysfunction, particularly those who are middle-aged, should be made aware of their potential for having underlying diabetes and be encouraged to obtain screening. In the same vein, physicians should be vigilant in obtaining sexual histories in middle-aged men and screening those with erectile dysfunction for diabetes,” they wrote.
