What Happens in Women’s Brains During Orgasm?

What Happens in Women’s Brains During Orgasm? Certain parts of the brain reach “peak levels of activity” when women have orgasms, a team of Rutgers University scientists report.

How do they know? They studied the brain function of 10 women who climaxed during an fMRI scan.

The term fMRI refers to functional magnetic resonance imaging, a procedure that allows scientists to assess how certain activities affect the brain. The approach has been used to study women’s orgasms before, but results have been inconsistent, as it takes women varying amounts of time to reach orgasm. Also, it’s important to keep the head still during an fMRI, which is difficult during orgasm.

For this study, the researchers devised a special device that could keep the head in place.
