More Sex Might Mean More Brain Power in Older AdultsStaying sexually active later in life may help preserve adults’ cognitive abilities, new research suggests. And it appears that having sex frequently is better for the brain.

Many experts believe that staying mentally sharp, maintaining social relationships, and being physically active goes a long way in keeping the brain healthy as people age. Scientists aren’t sure whether sex is considered a social or physical activity (or both), but some feel it could also be good for cognition.

The study, published in June in the Journals of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences built upon previous research with similar findings. That study found an association between sex and improved cognition in general, but it wasn’t clear whether improvements were seen in specific cognitive abilities. That’s where the current study focused.
