What inspired you to work in sexual medicine?
My mentor Dr. Ricardo Munarriz, who is a superb surgeon and excellent educator, motivated me toward this career path during residency. Whenever I need advice or have an impending difficult case I call Ricardo and Dr. Steve Wilson, who has also been a tremendous inspiration and support for me. I am also lucky to work with terrific residents, some of whom have gone on to careers in sexual medicine. Their burgeoning enthusiasm for our field continues to inspire me.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?
I have made a number of close friends because of this job. Seeing these friends at least twice a year (at AUA and SMSNA) brings me immense joy. I hope they all know how much I appreciate being their friend.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
My family and I celebrate Mardi Gras every year. We spend weeks making our own papier mache masks. There aren't a lot of venues for Mardi Gras festivities here in New Hampshire, so on Fat Tuesday we cook our own cajun and creole delicacies and dance the night away at home.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
When I was applying for my first job out of fellowship, Dr. Nelson Bennett told me that it didn't matter where I ended up working. He said that as soon as I hung up my metaphorical shingle announcing my services as a sexual medicine specialist, patients would soon follow. He was completely right, and I remain grateful for his insightful advice.
What would your ideal vacation be?
I very much enjoy spending time with my wife and son regardless of the location or circumstances of our vacations. I feel rejuvenated when I spend vacation time with them.
